Generally speaking, I think it's pretty simple. If you've got somebody, you're a fan of Valentine's Day; if not, you curse it for the greeting card industry's made-up-holiday ploy to force you into buying cards and chocolates and ridiculously over-sized stuffed bears holding hearts, that it really is.
